Last week’s municipal election in the Merafong City Local Municipality went ahead without problems.
Although some small hiccups occurred at some voting stations, nothing serious was
reported.
On Monday, the municipal electoral officer, Mr Hein Bredenkamp, thanked all voters
for their patience, political parties for their cooperation and police and other security officials for their assistance.
“We are very happy with the way that everything went. We finished counting all the votes by about 18:00 last Thursday, possibly making us one of the first municipalities in the province to have all votes in,” Bredenkamp told the Herald.
The ANC won 30 seats in the new council and The Democratic Alliance (DA) 12 seats after representatives of both parties won in some wards and the parties obtained proportional list seats on the council.
Several other parties had no victories in wards but obtained proportional list seats. These are the African Independent Congress with one seat, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) with nine seats, Vryheidsfront Plus with one seat, Inkatha Freedom Party with one seat and United Democratic Movement with one seat Various political parties will be represented on the municipal council during the next five years.
The African Independent Congress’s one proportional list councillor is Jacob Thabiso

The African National Congress’s (ANC) seven proportional list councillors are Sara
Madinoge Mogale, William Tlhanodi Mosiane, Mcebisi Moyeni, Mmasekwele Bella Lephuting, Nozuko Best, Disebo Violet Tabane and Mildred Nosamkelo Ndzilane.
The ANC’s ward councillors, who won in their respective wards during the past elections are Godfrey Mogomotsi Sello (Ward 1), Terrence Mvuleni Mnqandi (Ward 2), Michael Shimmy Links (Ward 3), Bukiwe Rose Mafika (Ward 4), Nasiwe
Mcetywa (Ward 5), Nono Abram Tsotetsi (Ward 6), Maphota Prinsloo Nkutha (Ward 7), Mzwandile Bennett Nkabinde (Ward 8), Mohapi Andries Malibe (Ward 9), Mosimanegape Nelson Matshe (Ward 10), Welcome Mpisekaya Mbaba (Ward
11), Thabo Mokuke (Ward 12), Fundani Sontshwayo (Ward 13), Luvo Aaron Mganu (Ward 15), Elizabeth Motshepuwa Lekopa (Ward 18), Vusumzi Magicpower Tyelingane (Ward 19), Mlungisi Ngqele (Ward 20), Maki Lydia Skosana (Ward 22), Marefilloe Francina Moeketsi-Mothlolo (Ward 23), Nkosinate Phinias Salane
(Ward 24), Msiwakhe David Dlhamini (Ward 25), Bongiwe Anna Mpeke (Ward 26) and Mthuthuzeli Naki (Ward 27).
The Democratic Alliance (DA) also has six proportional list councillors on the new
council. They are Mosiako Jeremiah Molokele, Mmashela Zillah Mashangoane, Johannes Tshidiso Mothibi, Sello Jacob Tlhapi, Christina Capkey, Matshidiso Wilheminah Ramodupi and Nomatamsanqa Cynthia Mngxekeza-Masela.
The DA’s ward councillors are Annett Venter (Ward 14), Davin Charles Nieuwenhuyzen (Ward 16), Lauralee Isherwood (Ward 17), Johan David Willem
Zwart (Ward 21) and Carlos Manuel Dias Rebelo (Ward 28).
For the first time, the Merafong City Local Council will also have members of the Economic Freedom Fighters in its ranks.
They are Itani Edwin Mukwevho, Johanna Thandi Malibe, Motsamai Alfred Legabe,
Mantshadi Paulina Teleleko, Motsisi Phillemon Lefakane, Ntaloleng Hazel Malinga, Tubako Elias Tsotesti, Mamokete Bellina Selelane and Joseph Mbuleli Ndobatha.
The Inkatha Freedom Party’s one proportional list councillor is Vusumuzi Bhekithemba Nkwanayana while the United Democratic Movement’s (UDM) only proportional list councillor is Ndidi Gcalangobuthi.
The Freedom Front Plus’s only proportional list candidate is Barend van den Berg.
