Some part-time students are experiencing difficulties in continuing with their studies at Wescol in Carletonville.
One very upset student phoned the Herald on Monday. He complained that he went to enrol for part-time studies at Wescol’s Carletonville Campus on Monday. To his disappointment, however, he found that the Carletonville campus does not offer the part-time version of the course. According to a notice on the wall, there will be no part
time N4, N5 and N6 classes and only limited N4, N5 and N6 business studies
enrolments.
‘This makes me very unhappy because I took a day off from work especially to go and enrol for the further studies. This is really a big problem because many students at Wescol are employees of mines and other businesses in the area who can only study part time,’ the man complained.
He went on to say that, when he enquired about the matter, he was told that the campus does not have enough lecturers to continue giving these classes.
The Herald contacted the spokesperson of Wescol, Ms Salome du Toit, for
more information about the matter.
She confirmed that there are currently various vacant posts at Wescol.
The college must first get permission to advertise these posts before they can be filled, she added.
This, together with the fact that there has been a huge increase in the number of students who want to study at Wescol’s five campuses, including Carletonville, is leading to difficulties.
Those students who cannot be accommodated in classes, however, do have the opportunity to enrol for limited contact studies that are run from Wescol’s Randfontein campus. Mr Chris Smit from this campus is available on 011 693 3608 to assist with more information.
According to Du Toit, Wescol enrols about 23 000 students each year.
