Local swimmers tackle Cradle Moon

Several members of the Carletonville Swimming Club tackled the second swim of Cradle Moon Swim Series in Krugersdorp last Sunday.

Although this was the second swim of the season, it was the first that many of the local swimmers had tackled. It was also an important preparation for next year’s Midmar Mile.
‘The swimmers did well. It was a hot, sunny day, with the smell of sunblock in the air. Although some swimmers were nervous, others were totally relaxed, the energy and support among all were great,’ one of the participants, Annalisa Freese, told the Herald on Tuesday.
Several swimmers took part in Event 2, the 1000 m swim for women of 13 years and under and above 30 years.
Aaliyah Mabanga came 43th out of the 68 swimmers in her category in a time of 24:48 minutes; Annalisa Freese came 22nd out of 69 in her category (23:28 min); Divan Grove swam with Marisan Grove, who came 44th out of 68 in her category (24:51 min); Gerrie Grove swam with Mieke Grove, who came 60th out of 68 (31:05 min); Minke Rheeder came 42nd of out the 68 swimmers in her category (24:44 min) and Olerato Maphangela came 52th out of the 68 swimmers in her category (26:51 min).
In Event 3, the 1 000 m event for boys of 13 years and under and men of 30 years and above, the club’s coach, Gerrie Grove, came 14th out of the 17 swimmers in his category in a time of 30:37 minutes. Luyanda Mbadamana came 45th out of 60 (25:11 min); Rory Frazer came 44th out of 60 (25:09 min) and Tiaan Wolfaardt came 24th out of 60 (20:56 min).
Event 4, the 1000 m swim for men and women of 14 to 30 years was very competitive and the local swimmers did exceptionally well. Caitlin Doran came 20th out of 113 (16:14 minutes), Divan Grove came 20th out of 79 (15:54 min); Kealeboga Khoza came 42nd out of 79 (19:28 min) and Rameez Mabanga came 51st out of 79 (20:39 mins).
Annalisa Freese, Caitlin Doran, Divan Grove and Pieter Steinmann completed Event 5, a 400 m fun swim that was not timed.
The next swim that the members of the club will take part in is the Cradle Moon Series 3 event on 19 and 20 January.
‘Thank you, coach, Gerrie Grove, for your passion for coaching us and thanks to all our loved ones for their support. We are very blessed,’ Freese added.

Mienke Rheeder also took part.
