Four officials arrested for corruption

Seven suspects, four of whom are licensing officials from the Merafong City Local Municipality, have been arrested at the Fochville licensing department on allegations of fraud related to issuing driving licences.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokes-person, Mr Simon Zwane, says RTMC’s national traffic anti- corruption unit members caught the suspects on Monday.
“The suspects include examiners of vehicles, a driving school operator and applicants.
One suspect had reportedly travelled from Cape Town to obtain a driving licence, allegedly without going through the normal process of applying for one.”
“The suspects are detained at Fochville police station. The investigations are continuing, and the prospects of more arrests at this stage are not ruled out,” Zwane said on Monday.
The CEO of the RTMC, Adv. Makhosini Msibi also issued a stern warning to those seeking to obtain driver’s licences fraudulently. “The anti-corruption unit remains dedicated to bringing corrupt individuals to justice.”
The RTMC added that amateur drivers contribute to the high fatality rate we face as a country. This corrupt practice puts many lives in danger as unskilled drivers don’t follow traffic rules and regulations. Reckless driving is one of the chief causes of road accidents.
On Tuesday afternoon, the municipal spokesperson confirmed that four of the arrested suspects are municipal employees. “Four of the municipality’s examiners from Fochville Driver’s License Testing Centre (DLTC) were arrested on allegations of fraudulent activities related to issuing driver’s licenses,” she says.
“The RTMC’s corruption unit is handling the cases with the South African Police Services. Measures are in place to ensure services are not interrupted at Fochville DLTC. The municipality cannot tolerate corruption of any kind. It must be reported to SAPS,” the spokesperson added.
