Carletonville sinkhole remains unrepaired a year after discovery
Residents raise concerns as the Merafong municipality fails to address a large sinkhole near the Carletonville Sports Complex despite repeated reports.
The Merafong City Local Municipality has still not attended to the deep sinkhole in the middle of Carletonville.
The sinkhole was discovered in the open veld near the Carletonville Sports Complex by CPI security guards during routine patrols in July 2025.
According to the area’s ward councillor, Dawie Harman, he immediately reported the incident to disaster management and the municipality, who cordoned the site off.
The sinkhole was approximately five metres wide and long, and between 10 and 15 metres deep when it was discovered, and had not grown significantly during the past year.
When the Herald visited the sinkhole this past week, it was still cordoned off but not filled up.
Some of the yellow plastic barriers had started to melt after the veld in the area was set alight recently.
The Herald asked the municipality when the sinkhole would be attended to on Monday, but received no feedback by printing time.
