Robbery at substation

Criminals stealing cables or even robbing people for it at gunpoint are unfortunately still very active in our area.

Criminals struck crucial electrical infrastructure again on April 8.

The latest incident happened at Eskom’s Carmel substation near Deelkraal.

Two security guards were patrolling at the substation when five robbers stormed them at about 20:05. The Sotho-speaking thugs pushed them to the ground and tied them up with their shoelaces. The robbers threatened to shoot them if they did not obey their orders.

One of the thugs watched the guards while the others went into the facility and communicated with him over their cell phones. Suddenly, the substation went dark, and the guards realised they had cut an electrical cable.

The thugs stole the guards’ cell phones and fled after a while. The guards then got loose and fetched help. Inspection showed the thieves had stolen an undisclosed amount of copper cable from the facility.
