Career expo in Carletonville

Everyone is welcome to make use of this opportunity.

Reabetswe Leeu (26), a founder of the non-profit company Reamogetse Katlego, is organising a career expo at the Carletonville Youth Centre on 18 May.

“Learners must realise that education is more than just a matric certificate,” she says. Shortly after launching Reamogetse Katlego in 2018, she hosted the first expo in Khutsong. The following year, the venue was the Carletonville Centre. Reabetswe explains that she struggled to find a career because she and her friends did not know what they wanted. The expo exposes young people to a variety of career possibilities. Reabetswe dropped out of varsity but later became a postgraduate in education from NWU.

She aims to bring value to the education sector. Reamogetse Katlego focuses on youth development, specifically career expos. This year, the spotlight is on people’s intentions when choosing careers, and identifying three careers of the participants’ choice. Contributors include universities, colleges, private companies, and skills development organisations like Setas (Sector Education And Training Authorities. A career coach, and online applications for learnerships, scholarships and internships are also available.

“I feel our basic education system is failing us. I want the government to invest in developing teachers regarding life orientation,” she said. She emphasised that learners need support systems at home to discover themselves.

“They must discover who they are, what they like and what they are good at, have a plan, and be informed by reading and watching the news,” she added. The organisation invites high school learners, those who have matriculated, graduates, and job seekers.

“Our message to the community is that we are a small town, far from opportunities. We are bringing this information home, so you do not have to travel,” Reabetswe said.

“Everyone is welcome, whether for study, the arts, or skills development.” Reamogetse Katlego aims to grow the event in years to come. Unfortunately, doing so requires adequate sponsorship and resources, including marketing tools, refreshments, and Wi-fi.
