Motorist lashes back against hijackers on P111

These hijackers got much more than they bargained for.

An improbable incident occurred on the P111 between Carletonville and Westonaria last week.

A 32-year-old Westonaria resident took his wife to work at East Driefontein at about 18:30 on Thursday, 18 April. As he drove his Hyundai ix35 back onto the P111, an Isuzu bakkie drove behind him and pushed him off the road.

Two men jumped from the bakkie into his car, and one pointed a firearm at him from the back seat. The driver, however, refused to heed their commands and drove off.

After a struggle, one of the hijackers pulled up the handbrake, causing the driver to lose control.

The car went off the road and landed in a ditch filled with water on the side of the road.

One hijacker jumped out of the car and ran away into the veld. A struggle ensued between the driver and the second one.

In the end, the driver drowned the hijacker in the water in the ditch.
The deceased hijacker has since been identified as a 35-year-old Mozambican national.

Due to the circumstances of the incident, the police did not charge the driver with murder. Instead, the Director of Public Prosecutions will review his statement before deciding the way forward.
