Sport Centre going to waste

This facility in Carletonville, that residents once used to be proud of, is continually looking worse.

Although vandalism and a lack of maintenance have plagued the Carletonville Sports Centre in the past, it is now worse than ever.

On Monday morning, residents complained about a water leak on Onyx Drive by the Sports Centre. The ward councillor, Carlos Rebelo, reported the matter further. That afternoon, the water was still dammed up in the street next to the facility.

It seemed the water leaked from two places on the road surface, next to trees on the sidewalk.

Anyone could drive into the sports centre terrain, as the soccer grounds gate is permanently open. There is no longer grass there, as it has died due to a lack of maintenance. The rest of the facility is also freely accessible because parts of the palisade fence in front of the facility are missing.

Thieves have also stolen sections of it, both inside and out. They have even stolen some uprights from the razor wire at the soccer field, causing the fence to collapse. Therefore, anyone could access the buildings from the back.

By 13:00 on Monday, no security was there to guard the facility. It is unclear which municipal contractor was supposed to guard the facility. Although a company from Carletonville used to be responsible, they are no longer at the sports centre. The municipality has also not done anything to cut the tall reeds and grass growing at a previous water leak on the side of the Sports Centre.

Although the Herald took the issues to the municipality on Monday, we did not get a reply.

Parts of the fences in various places at the centre have been removed, making it possible for anyone to enter.
