Owl box for UCPA

“Now we’ll have to wait and see if an owl will come to the box. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.”

THE United Cerebral Palsy Association (UCPA) in Townsview, recently contacted EcoSolutions, which is responsible for the installation and the running of the Urban Owl Box Project, asking about investing in an owl box for their property.

“We have quite a few rats coming onto the UCPA grounds and into some of our offices, from the veld at the back of our property. After reading up on how to eliminate them, we contacted EcoSolutions, who were keen on coming to our aid,” said Mark Paterson (project administrator at UCPA).

On Thursday, February 18, three members from EcoSolutions arrived at UCPA with an owl box and looked for a good place to put it. After walking around the grounds it was decided that one of the tall trees was a likely spot for the box. Brighton Mhlanga climbed the tree and Jackson Mageza set about hoisting the box up to Brighton.

“EcoSolutions is actively involved in a number of educational programmes. We conduct owl releases at schools and other centres of learning as they are generally perfect sites for owl habitation. At present we have around fifty schools in the greater Gauteng area involved in these projects. Since inception, nearly 84 000 children have been involved in the various projects,” said Kefiloe Motaung, project coordinator.

“Our main focus is in townships where rats are a huge problem,” added Kefiloe.

Another interesting fact, male owls hoot twice and female’s hoot three times.

Marie van den Berg, director of UCPA, said: “Now we’ll have to wait and see if an owl will come to the box. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.”
