[GALLERY + VIDEOS]: Women learn some life-changing skills at JKA South Bassonia Karate Club

Don’t mess with these women.

A FREE self-defence workshop was held on July 21 with a great attendance from women ready to fight back and take responsibility for their own safety.

The workshop hosted by the Japan Karate Association (JKA) South Bassonia Karate Club saw 30 women from 16 to 63 years old learning some self-defence skills.

SAFETY MOVES: Senior instructor Karyn Smith illustrates some skills on how women can counter an attacker who has pinned them down.

Running under the theme “Don’t be a victim – learn how to fight back”, the workshop was a success as women were taken under an intensive three-hour training session to prepare and equip themselves with strategic skills to survive any attack.

According to the club’s senior instructor, Karyn Smith, the workshop was successful as many women were exposed to important safety skills to prevent them from being the bad guys’ target.

“The attendance was great and it would be nice to have more people attend next time but I’m glad to have all these ladies getting involved in taking charge of their own safety. With statistics showing several women being attacked or abused on a daily basis in South Africa, these skills are a top priority for any South African woman,” she said.

FIGHT BACK: More skills illustrated by senior instructor, Karyn Smith.

Apart from two karate women in attendance, Karyn said most women who attended the workshop were all karate first timers.

The oldest attendee, Charlotte Wessels, a 63-year-old lady, said it is never too late for one to learn some self-defence skills.
