A day out with Animal Protection Network
Supporting the animals of Thinasonke.
Animal Protection Network (APN) committee members and community volunteers met at Brackendowns SAPS on October 10 to convoy to Thinasonke township for another outreach day.
The cause of the day was to feed animals and inspect the wellness of the animals.
Thinasonke outreach
Members of the Thinasonke community welcomed the volunteers with open arms and they were eager to help.
“On these outreaches, one never knows what to expect, but we always pray that the animals are been well taken care of and all they need is some food and love,” said members.
The day started quietly with some home visits, handing out pet food and general checking of the pets’ conditions.
“On arrival at the bottom of the first road, we came across a puppy that did not look well and undernourished.”
Worms were the initial diagnosis and he was taken to Brackenhurst Vet where it was discovered that the puppy had the initial symptoms of a potentially deadly disease called parvo. It was booked in to begin treatment. Members also came across another dog that had to be rushed to the vet with suspected poisoning.
“Unfortunately, the dog did not make it.”
A third dog, Cyber, had numerous infected bite marks on the legs. On further investigation, it was found that Cyber had cancer in the leg and it would have to be amputated.
“It was, however, decided with advice that it would be better to put the dog down as the township life would be too difficult for its survival,” said members.
Two members, Di Hingley and Zuerina Venter, were with Cyber in his last moments as the family could not be there. APN members also came across a dog named, Layla, who was rushed to the vet on suspicion that she was knocked over. Layla has a fractured hip and femur and was booked in to be operated.
Thank you
“We would like to thank all those who have donated in the past, our volunteers, Brackenhurst Vet, Hennie Alberts Vet, Paws In Motion and JustOneThing365 for supporting us to do what we do best.
“They have helped to give the animals the care and love they deserve and at times a second chance at life,” said APN members.
Get involved
“Being part of an animal welfare organisation is at times heartbreaking but the ones we can save bring much joy and make this all worth the time we give to ensure we can help the voiceless animals,” said APN member Christian Santangelo.
