A 65-YEAR-OLD woman in Linmeyer feared for her life when a group of strikers showed up to burn plastic bins, which had been put outside for emptying, in the early hours of Saturday, April 2.
The senior, who asked not to be named as she fears for her life, said she heard on the radio and read in a national newspaper that residents were encouraged to put their bins outside by Pikitup as they would be emptied.
But putting her bin among four others resulted in the biggest fright of her life when she heard a racket and saw a group of strikers burn all the bins to the ground around 02:00.
“I was so scared for my life. The fire got so high I thought it could even burn my place as it made explosive sounds. I think it could have been the plastic bins or the bottles cracking from fire. I could not go out because I am an elderly woman. I waited for them to leave, and around 08:00, three men from City Power came and helped put out the remaining fire. The men from City Power were very angry because the bins were burnt near a power station and could have caught a fire and made matters worse,” she told the COMARO team.
The concerned resident from Risi Street said she wants to warn residents of the South about this as she and other residents no longer have bins. She said Pikitup told her it does not have stock for bins at the moment.
The COMARO team is in communication with Pikitup and a comment will follow shortly.
