Christmas in July warms up winter

Based on this year’s successful Christmas in July campaign, it may well become an annual campaign.

THE Christmas in July campaign, hosted by Manny and Jeanette de Freitas proved to be a great success as, once again, people showed their selflessness and generosity despite the tough economic climate.

This is a campaign where the public was requested to donate personal goods such as toiletries and clothing. These goods are then distributed to those in need, particularly in winter.

“The response to the Christmas in July campaign has been a great success. Much greater than we could’ve imagined,” explained Jeanette de Freitas. Manny de Freitas also said because of the great number of donated goods more people were helped. “Thanks to the many donations of goods we were able to provide so much more people than originally planned, making their winter better than it would’ve previously been,” said Manny de Freitas.

As part of the first round of distributions to those in need, two institutions were visited where goods were distributed. “Bienvenue Shelter, with which I’ve had a long association, was the first place we went to,” explained Manny de Freitas. The management and residents of this women’s shelter were most welcoming and grateful for the ‘Christmas’ gifts.

“We also visited Casa Ebeneza which is an old age home based in the south of Johannesburg,” clarified Jeanette de Freitas. She explained that it was most heart-warming to visit the senior citizens for an afternoon. The residents of Casa Ebeneza were happy with the gifts and the company.
