MOFFAT View police have confirmed that a theft occurred at Burger King on Comaro Crossing on Friday, January 5.
“The complainant who is in her early 20’s, was enjoying a meal at a local outlet (Burger King) when she later realised that her handbag was missing. She then reported the matter to the police who visited the scene and went through the closed circuit TV (CCTV) footage at the store. It clearly showed two unknown ladies leaving with the complainant’s bag,” said the station communications officer at Moffat View, Captain Jeff Phora.
He confirmed that police have opened a case of theft and investigations are underway.
The shopping centre also issued a statement following the theft. It reads as follows:
Unfortunately, criminals who prey on shoppers are common in all malls across South Africa. Although we do our utmost to ensure the safety of shoppers at all times, it is not always easy to spot opportunistic criminals who make it their business to appear like any other customer. As a result, it is important for those visiting any malls to take precautions.
Handbags which contain valuables such as purses, wallets and cell phones are easy targets for opportunistic thieves. As a result, we would like to appeal to all of our customers to be extra vigilant, especially during busy periods when they are easily distracted. Please keep handbags close to you at all times and closed or zipped up so that they are not easy targets for pick-pockets.
When eating at a restaurant, please ensure that your handbag is safely stowed either on your lap or under the table close to you or even between your feet. Try not to hang handbags over the backs of chairs or leave them next to the table or a chair where they can be easily removed. Safety is paramount to the management at Comaro Crossing Shopping Centre.
