JMPD’s spokesperson Wayne Minnaar confirmed the arrest of 17 people during a roadblock on the N1 highway near Soweto on April 3.
“We have arrested these people for contravening of the Covid-19 disaster regulations which people are out not adhering to. This kind of operation will continue for the duration of lockdown.”
He said the purpose of these roadblocks is to ensure that people comply with the rules and that thee only travel when absolutely necessary for essential goods or services.
“Some people are out on the road for no reason and most of them don’t have permits giving them permission to be travelling. We have made 17 arrests for people who are not following the law. This is to show people that we are serious about this, and people just need to stay at home,” said Minnaar.
Roadside checkpoints were conducted by the JPMD Freeway Unit together with Gauteng Traffic, joined by executive mayor Geoff Makhubo and MMC Mally Mokoena at N1 North Southbound between Soweto Highway and Randshow Road in Diepkloof.
