City officially kicks off Transport Month 2021
During October, the public will be informed about the safety and importance of public transport.
MMC for Transport Nonhlanhla Makhuba launched October Transport Month 2021 on October 8.
The focus was on highlighting road safety issues, including a series of face-to-face engagement sessions with Rea Vaya commuters at various stations to address complaints and suggestions in an effort to provide safer, reliable and efficient public transport services.
Under the theme Together, Let’s Fix Transport, the department and its entities will highlight progress made on the infrastructure development and rehabilitation initiatives by the Johannesburg Road Agency, the handover of the Johannesburg International Transport Interchange, the acceptance of the recognition certificate from Airports Company South Africa by the MMC for Transport on behalf of Metrobus at OR Tambo International Airport and an update on the 2021/22 public transport and service delivery plans within the City.
“In line with the theme, our focus for the 2021 Transport Month is on safety across all modes of transport. We are constantly looking into best practices locally and internationally to make our public mobility system more safe, sustainable and resilient for passengers,” said Makhuba.
The specific objectives of this year’s Transport Month will highlight the City’s plans, which are geared towards building an effective, safe, affordable, accessible and reliable transport system and to further advance road safety initiatives, while also creating awareness of the economic benefits of the sector.
This year will also see a partnership with the environment and infrastructure services department in hosting a webinar that will galvanise both internal and external stakeholders to unpack the environmental impact of the transport sector and identify opportunities and interventions that will contribute to the reduction of emissions.
This month will also be used to provide all residents with information to empower them about public transport and road safety while highlighting the importance of public transport.
