Six inmates escape while escorted to Vosloorus court

The prisoners were freed by a group of armed men driving a silver Audi vehicle.

The police have launched a manhunt after six inmates escaped from custody while en route to the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court on the morning of January 14.

According to national police spokesperson Col Brenda Muridili, the police truck was transporting the prisoners when they were ambushed by a group of armed men driving a silver Audi vehicle at the corner of Barry Marais and Rondebult streets in Boksburg.

“Five of the six prisoners who escaped were due to appear in court for a business robbery case reported in Dawnpark, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm, and the sixth escapee was due for his first appearance on a shoplifting case,” said Muridili.

Muridili explained that all the accused are Zimbabwean nationals. Their names are Nkululeko Nkomo, Robert Hlatshwayo, Thulani Dube, Augustine Moyo and Mbongiseni Mkandla. The sixth suspect’s name is not known.

Police are appealing to anyone with information on the whereabouts of the escapees and the suspects who freed them to report on the Crime Stop number 086 00 10111 or send tip-offs on the MySAPS app.
