Johannesburg Flying Squad members arrested two suspects for possession of a hijacked vehicle and unlicensed firearm on January 15 around 11:55.
Members were busy with crime prevention on the N3 South when they noticed a white Hyundai Getz with three occupants.
On seeing the members, the suspects sped off in the direction of R24, Bedfordview, where a shootout ensued between members and suspects.
The vehicle was stopped at the Gillooly’s off-ramp and one suspect evaded arrest.
Two suspects were searched and a CZ 9mm pistol was discovered, and it was also discovered that the white Hyundai Getz was hijacked by the owner. Both suspects were subsequently arrested and detained at Bedfordview SAPS for possession of a hijacked vehicle and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Investigations are ongoing for more suspects.
Johannesburg Flying Squad communications officer Raymond Sambo said in another policing matter, on January 17 at about 12:30, members were patrolling around Triomf when they noticed a suspect removing a number plate of a white VW Golf at the corner of Toby and Edward roads.
Members approached the vehicle, and a suspect threw a firearm underneath the white Golf when he saw the police. Three suspects were searched and arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and detained at Sophiatown SAPS.
“All suspects appeared in different magistrate’s courts,” he said.
