Schools are encouraged to have their schools inspected
The City of Ekurhuleni encourages schools to contact the environmental health offices to have their premises inspected by the City’s environmental health practitioners.
According to the National Environmental Health Norms and Standards for Premises and Acceptable Monitoring Standards for Environmental Health published in terms of the National Health Act No 61 of 2003, schools should be inspected at least once a year.
The environmental health practitioners inspect school premises to ensure the safety of both learners and school staff.
Inspections comprise of water quality monitoring, compliance with food safety standards for schools handling food and waste management.
Inspectors will further look at the compliance of the school building with the National Building Regulations and Building Standard Act 103 of 1977 and the availability and compliance of toilet and wash up facilities as per the provisions set out in the National Building Regulations and SANS 10 400.
School personnel or members of the governing body may contact the City’s environmental health offices on 011 011 999 2970 or at Nomvula.Sirenqe@ekurhuleni.gov.za to enquire about the services offered or to invite an EHP to inspect the school.
