Man arrested for truck hijacking, perjury and theft

The suspect appeared briefly in Booysens Magistrate’s Court and was denied bail and remanded in custody.

A man was arrested for truck hijacking, perjury and theft on January 5.

It is alleged that on that day at around 19:30, the suspect, who was the driver of the truck, stopped the company truck, a white Volvo horse 440 with two trailers loaded with various brands of alcohol (ciders, lagers and whiskeys) worth R4-million at Excel garage corner Southern Klipriviersberg and Heidelberg roads.

Moffat View SAPS communications officer Sgt Solly Matjila said the driver alleged that he was accosted by an unknown African man who pointed a firearm at him and demanded the truck’s keys.

According to his statement, an unknown white private car with two African male occupants approached and forced him into the car and drove off with him, leaving the truck behind.

“A case docket of truck hijacking was registered at Moffat View SAPS and was handed over to the Johannesburg Trio Task Team for investigations. Police investigations with the help of CCTV footage led to the arrest of the truck driver. An arrest of more suspects is imminent.

“The suspect appeared briefly at Booysens Magistrate’s Court and was denied bail and remanded in custody. Police investigations are underway,” he said.

For more information, Sgt Matjila can be contacted on 072 122 0759.
