South Rand Hospital observing Breastfeeding Month
August is National Breastfeeding Month dedicated to advancing advocacy, protection, and promotion of breastfeeding to ensure that all families have the opportunity to breastfeed.
August is National Breastfeeding Month, a time to recognise the importance of breastfeeding and supporting our breastfeeding mothers.
Breastfeeding is beneficial for both mother and baby. It helps protect the baby from many serious health problems.
At South Rand Hospital, they are committed to providing breastfeeding support for moms and babies.
Samantha Meyers, who works at the hospital said: “We want mothers to have the information they need to care for their newest addition to the family.”

Breastfeeding consultants taught mothers techniques to make breastfeeding easier so that they can see for themselves how rewarding this experience can be.
Mothers were taught that besides the health benefits for newborns, breastfeeding provides many benefits for the mother, too. In addition to deepening the bond between mother and child, breastfeeding can decrease the amount of maternal bleeding after birth and can help a new mother lose pregnancy weight naturally.
Studies also show breast milk can reduce the rates of high blood pressure, diabetes and breast and ovarian cancers.
Sister Azwindini Malaba, who works at the antenatal clinic, said she helps to educate and encourage mothers on successful breastfeeding practices.

“Breastfeeding is a steep learning curve, and the early days can often be the hardest. It may not come naturally at the beginning, but they should not be discouraged,” said Malaba.
Malaba’s goal is to support mothers and their breastfeeding goals, and to walk alongside them during this new journey.
Samantha Meyers emphasised that breast milk is the best source of nutrition for most babies and provides the ideal nutrition for the baby’s growth and development.
It is recommended that infants be exclusively breastfed for the first six months.
“Your breast milk will adjust to meet your baby’s needs.”
