Broken Wings Association for Adults with Disabilities hosted their Spring Tea fundraiser at Brackenhurst Bowling Club on October 8.
The Spring Tea fundraiser was held in collaboration with the Global Organisation for Brighter Youth Foundation (GOBY), and the day was filled with smiles and laughter before settling in to be entertained by singer Jaco Briel.

Centre manager Willemien Botha said this was their first fundraiser this year following a two-year lapse due to Covid-19.
“We are hoping to raise R25 000, and the funds raised will be used to assist and support the centre. There are 20 adults in the centre, and we need the money to help them with food, equipment and arts and crafts,” she said.

Vaughn Bishop, founder and director of GOBY, said: “I came in today’s event more as a parent to my son, who is also in the centre, and less as a representative of the GOBY foundation.

“Since I serve on the committee, we helped with the purchase of the tables and the money that goes to the centre.”

Bishop said the purpose of the event was to raise awareness of what the centre is all about, as well as to show people with disabilities that they are not overlooked and are valued members of society.

“There are quite a few adults who have made beautiful crafts, and the visitors get a chance to witness and buy. This will give them hope that they can make something that people want to buy. We would like to thank everybody who came and supported, it means a lot,” said Bishop.

Ten more adults are needed in the centre. For more information contact centre manager, Botha at 011 907 6743 or email: brokenwings@absamail.coza.
