4Racing gears on ahead of Betway Summer Cup

Super-Group Owned Betway comes on board as exciting new headline sponsors of the 2022 Betway Summer Cup.

4Racing is pleased to announce Betway as the headline sponsor of the 2022 Betway Summer Cup, which will be held at Turffontein Racecourse on November 26.

Johannesburg’s flagship race will have the theme of The Golden Summer. Betway’s sponsorship will see the stakes for the Grade 1 Betway Summer Cup increase this year to R2.5m.

The Betway Summer Cup is one of South Africa’s premier horse races. This year it will reportedly be a festive, joyous occasion celebrating Johannesburg’s return to bustling activity and major events after the global Covid-19 pandemic.

The first entries for the Betway Summer Cup closed on September 21 and underlined the event’s status as one of South African horseracing’s blue ribbon events.

With the likes of Graded race champions such as Sparkling Water, Rain in Holland, Safe Passage, Red Saxon, Aragosta, Bingwa and MK’s Pride among the early entries, along with notable performers such as Hoedspruit and previous winner Zillzaal.

Fundi Sithebe, 4Racing CEO, warmly welcomed Betway on board as the sponsor of the Betway Summer Cup for the next three years.

“This is a partnership long in the making and we are absolutely delighted to have a global juggernaut such as Super-Group-owned Betway join 4Racing in sponsoring one of our season’s most cherished and coveted events. The Betway Summer Cup promises to be a sensational day of high-quality horseracing and loads of fun for young and old,” she said.

Sithebe said they are looking forward to working with the Betway team in building up to what they have no doubt will be an amazing race day for all.

‘New venture’

Betway SA Country manager, Phillip Superamonien, said they are excited by the opportunity to demonstrate their innovative approach to sports sponsorship in South Africa.

He said horseracing forms part of a new and exciting venture that they as a brand, are proudly embarking on, along with their partners at 4Racing.

“Horse racing is steeped in tradition in our country and we want to play a part in trying to reinstate that. It’s no secret the challenges that horse racing has been through and faced. but we have no doubt that the industry can yet be a source of great fun and enjoyment for all stakeholders. We look forward to a successful Betway Summer Cup and the growth of it in years to come,” he said.

Betway ambassador and trainer Mike de Kock, said: “I think its fantastic Betway are involved with our flagship event being the Summer Cup. This shows Betway’s commitment to horse racing and I look forward to what their impact on the industry will be. I’ve been particularly impressed with Betway and their direct involvement with the grooms and my stable in particular.”

He said they are making a big difference in their lives which is extremely important and shows their commitment to uplifting the community and industry as a whole.

The Betway Summer Cup is said to be a celebration of the ‘city of gold’s’ vibrant lifestyle and its warm, wonderful people.

Popular features of the Betway Summer Cup this year will be the Summer Garden hospitality area, the Piazza public area with its delicious food stalls, activities and entertainment and a halftime concert with some of South Africa’s top musical talent.

4Racing will soon announce further details of additional sponsors coming on board to ensure the Betway Summer Cup is a memorable day out for avid punters and for those looking to kick off the festive season.

The Betway Summer Cup will be run on November 26 at Turffontein Racecourse. Second entries close at 11:00 on November 1.

Final entries close at 09:00 on November 18, on which date the weights will be published. Final declarations are due by 11:00 on November 21, when the Barrier Draw will take place.
