Paratriathletes gear up for the Paratriathlon African Championships

Local visually impaired triathletes will leave for the African Triathlon Championships in Egypt later in the year and need your assistance to make that trip possible

Visually impaired triathletes, Gavin Kilpatrick and Heinrich Vermaak have teamed up with triathlon guides David Taylor and Jefferson Murdoch to make their mark in paratriathlon history.

This South African team of four recently won gold and silver at the South African ParaTriathlon Championships and were invited to compete at the Paratriathlon African Championships in Egypt in October 2023.

Mayberry Park paratriathlete Gavin Kilpatrick and his tandem pilot Richard Mountjoy recently participated in the Albion Wheelers time trial series race in Randvaal.

Brackenhurst visually impaired triathlete Heinrich Vermaak and his pilot Jefferson Murdock took part in the time trial series race over 14km per individual time trial.

This was after they took part in the South African Triathlon Championships on March 19 in Nelson Mandela Bay, where they again came out on top. By competing there, they are now eligible to race in Egypt, though it depends on whether they can find sponsorship.

“We took part in the race as part of our preparation towards the Durban ultra triathlon taking place on August 8, which also forms part of our training block towards Paratriathlon African Championships on October 15 in Egypt,” explained Kilpatrick.

They have launched a social media campaign #BeBrave and #RoadToEgypt, and encourage people to share their #BeBrave Stories with them on these platforms and invite all to join their sporting journey.

“We also hope to promote ourselves as a sporting brand and ask potential sponsors to assist with the fundraising or finances towards our competitions. We ask people to follow our pages on VIP MultiSport (Facebook) and @vipmultisport (Instagram), as this is where we will share our journey to the championships. This is also where people can show their support,” he said.
