4Racing unveils first phase accommodation renovation project
4Racing committed to completing the project by the end of 2023, solidifying its commitment to promoting a fair and dignified work environment for all individuals in the horse racing industry.
A significant step towards transformation and empowerment in the horseracing industry was unveiled on August 2 as 4Racing, the prominent horse racing operator, marked the completion of the first phase of the groom’s accommodation quarters renovation at the Turffontein Racecourse.
The renovation of the accommodation is a pivotal aspect of the ongoing transformation initiative, designed to uplift and improve the welfare of the historically marginalized grooms, who play a vital role in the horseracing community.

The groom for example is responsible for the daily routine of watering and feeding the horses, keeping them and their stalls clean, and caring for any injuries, providing basic medical attention.

The project, which commenced in February this year, came to fruition after 4Racing conducted an extensive audit of Grooms accommodation in its racing jurisdictions. The findings revealed that the grooms’ living conditions at Turffontein were in appalling condition, demanding urgent attention and repairs.
Amidst a ceremony held at Turffontein, 4Racing’s CEO Fundi Sithebe proudly announced the completion of phase one of the renovations. The refurbished double-storey units were officially handed over to the trainers and grooms, symbolizing a new era of care and appreciation for the backbone of the horseracing industry.

“This project is about far more than physical upgrades; it represents the appreciation and respect for grooms who have long been amongst the most marginalized members of the horseracing community,” said Sithebe.
During the renovation process, 4Racing had to temporarily reallocate 50% of the grooms to alternative accommodation.
This week, 52 grooms will move back into their refurbished double-storey units, while 62 grooms will occupy temporary accommodation as the second phase of the project commences, expected to conclude by the end of the year.

The commitment and foresight of the 4Racing Board were highlighted by Sithebe, who praised the board’s approval of the renovations as part of the broader 4Racing transformation initiative.
This initiative includes the transfer of 26% of 4Racing to a grooms and employees’ trust, reflecting the company’s ethos of profit through purpose and focusing on dignity and equality for the grooms and stable hands.

Nceba Magazi, the grooms representative at Turffontein, said: “We find immense joy in being acknowledged as fellow human beings. At this moment, we can proudly say that we are seen, our voices are heard, we are recognised, and having a voice was all we ever desired.”
With this project’s completion, 4Racing aims to not only enhance the physical infrastructure but also prioritise the overall well-being and safety of the grooms. Sithebe emphasized the need for the grooms to take responsibility for maintaining and upkeeping the upgraded accommodation, hoping that this transformational initiative would signify a positive change in their lifestyle.
