Emotions ran high as the accused and the victim’s families exchanged heated words inside the courtroom after proceedings.
Tensions flared in the Johannesburg High Court on June 2 following proceedings in the trial of Amber Lee Hughes, accused of raping and murdering four-year-old Nada-Jane Challita.
A video from the scene shows a woman, believed to be Nada-Jane’s mother, shouting at Amber, “Count your days, your days are numbered.”
Amber’s father, Howard Hughes, responded by accusing the woman of trying to sell her child and claiming to have proof. She reacted by swearing and raising her hands. Nada-Jane’s father, Elie Challita, also joined the argument.
No physical contact occurred, and the families eventually separated.

Hughes allegedly drowned the child in a bathtub. Her lifeless body was found floating in the bath in Mulbarton, Johannesburg South, on January 23, 2023.
Hughes, who had moved in with the child’s father, has pleaded not guilty to rape and murder.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, Hughes allegedly threatened to harm the child during a dispute. It is claimed she raped the child using an object and then drowned her.
Howard Hughes testified that Amber often babysat Nada-Jane and had a close relationship with the family. He denied she played any role in the child’s death.
Judgment is expected to be handed down on June 19.
