Female pilot driver among 3 arrested on N12 West after vehicle theft

The arrest of the female pilot driver and two other suspects follows a series of Toyota Corolla Cross thefts reported across Gauteng over several months.

A dramatic intelligence-driven operation ended when three suspects, including a female pilot driver, were arrested on the N12 West near Comaro Street in the Bassonia area shortly after stealing a Toyota Corolla Cross outside Kempton Park Court on September 22.

According to Donovan du Toit from Fox Security, a grey Haval Jolion has been linked to a spate of Toyota Corolla Cross thefts across Gauteng for months, with incidents reported in the West Rand, Johannesburg, the East Rand, and Johannesburg South.

“Intelligence-directed operational teams were deployed to the East Rand after the suspect’s vehicle was flagged. The Haval was seen scouting for more than an hour before the suspects struck. They stole a white Toyota Corolla Cross outside Kempton Park Court,” said du Toit.

Du Toit explained that teams had already positioned themselves at key exit routes. The stolen vehicle was quickly recovered after being abandoned, and moments later, the Haval was intercepted on the N12 West near Comaro Road. This led to the arrest of three suspects, including a female driver.

According to intelligence, the woman had previously been linked to piloting stolen vehicles using the Haval Jolion.

As vehicle thieves become increasingly resourceful, incidents like the Toyota Corolla Cross theft serve as a stark reminder for car owners to stay vigilant.

Fidelity ADT advises drivers to take precautions to protect their vehicles from criminal tactics, including remote jammers.

Here are seven tips to help avoid falling victim:

  1. Check your locks: Never assume your car is locked; physically check the doors before walking away. If a door opens, drive away immediately, as criminals may have targeted your vehicle.
  2. Be aware of your surroundings: Watch for suspicious people loitering around parking areas or sitting in cars.
  3. Trust your instincts: Look around as you drive in and before you park. Report anything suspicious to security or relocate your vehicle.
  4. Keep your boot private: When opening your boot, be mindful that valuables inside are visible to anyone nearby.
  5. Hide valuables: Never leave valuables in plain sight inside your car.
  6. Park smart: Always choose safe locations with good lighting, many cars, and the presence of security guards.
  7. Consider GPS tracking: Real-time car tracking can provide added peace of mind.

By following these precautions, car owners can reduce the risk of falling prey to thefts like the one that led to the arrest of the female pilot driver and her accomplices.
