A disturbing wave of shootings along the N12 highway has left at least eight people dead and several others seriously injured over the past six months, raising serious concerns about safety along one of the province’s busiest routes.

Since April, the N12 has been the scene of multiple violent incidents, including armed robberies, drive-by shootings, and vehicle-related crimes.

According to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, five suspects were fatally shot by SAPS members in separate operations linked to these crimes.

She said that four of the suspects were involved in a liquor store robbery that led to a fatal shootout with officers.

A fifth suspect, killed in a separate incident, was linked to a staggering 29 cases of vehicle theft.

In addition, three incidents are being investigated as suspected drive-by shootings. Authorities have not yet identified the perpetrators, and no arrests have been made in connection with those attacks.

The series of shootings, all occurring within a span of just six months, has sparked fear among regular road users.

Ruan van Wyk, a commuter who travels the N12 daily, expressed his growing concern: “What is most scary is that these shootings could claim innocent lives. This road is used by thousands of commuters every day. In the most recent shooting, a woman’s car was hit, and by God’s grace, she wasn’t injured. But that could have been anyone.”
Motorists have called on authorities to step up visible policing, particularly during early mornings and late evenings, when some of the incidents have reportedly taken place.

Community safety organisations are also urging road users to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

As the violence continues to mount, residents and travellers alike are demanding swift action before more lives are lost.
