The JMPD maintained a high-visibility presence across the City of Johannesburg during the Easter weekend as part of its intensified safety operations.

The aim of the operation was to ensure that residents and visitors remained safe during the busy holiday period.
However, recent statistics showed that some motorists continued to ignore road safety rules.

JMPD officers were deployed at various strategic points across the city to deal with drunk driving and other offences.

In the space of 48 hours, a total of 121 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

On Thursday, April 2, 39 suspects were arrested. This number increased sharply on Good Friday, April 3, when 82 motorists were arrested.

The department stressed that drinking and driving is dangerous and puts many lives at risk. Officials said there is no excuse for such behaviour.

Tragically, two fatalities were reported at the start of the Easter weekend. On Thursday, officers attended a fatal accident involving a pedestrian. On Good Friday, another fatal crash occurred involving a passenger.

JMPD extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.

As the long weekend continued, JMPD urged all road users to be extra careful. Pedestrians were advised to stay visible and use designated crossing points. Motorists were reminded to obey speed limits and not to drink before driving.

The department confirmed that operations would continue across all regions of Johannesburg to help keep the community safe.
