Marist Brothers Linmeyer learners embark on WITS innovation journey

These future innovators are ready to make waves in solving the city's water crisis.

Five Grade 11 learners from Marist Brothers Linmeyer have been selected to represent their school in the prestigious WITS Integrated Experience (WIE) 2025 – an annual innovation challenge hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand.

Competing alongside learners from approximately 50 top Gauteng schools, the selected team, Daniela Fernandes, Prem Mistry, Dominique Moore, Kaelin Pillay and Aafreen Rawoot recently attended a full-day immersion at WITS. They engaged with short courses across five key faculties: science, engineering, humanities, health sciences, and commerce and law.

The programme aims to expose learners to real-world problem-solving while building vital 21st-century skills like creative thinking, collaboration and complex reasoning. Participants also interacted with leading academics to explore the interdisciplinary nature of today’s global challenges.

This year’s theme, Preventing Day Zero – Securing Johannesburg’s Water Future, challenges learners to design innovative, practical solutions to the city’s looming water crisis.

Now back at school, the Marist team is working on a proposal they’ll present to a panel of judges at WITS on July 25.

Marketing manager Tracy Edwards said, “We are incredibly proud of Daniela, Prem, Dominique, Kaelin and Aafreen. Their commitment to addressing such a pressing issue speaks volumes about their character and potential.”
