Johannesburg community hosts cancer fundraiser to support Diane Smith’s treatment

A fun-day event held at The Fives Balfour raised funds to support local mom Diane Smith in her fight against stage 4 cancer.

The community recently came together for a fun day fundraiser to support Diane Smith, a local single mother and hairdresser, in her ongoing fight against cancer.

The event held at The Fives Balfour (rooftop, Balfour Mall) aimed to raise much-needed funds for Smith’s medical treatment.

Just a year after beating stage 3B cervical cancer, Smith now faces an even tougher challenge: a diagnosis of stage 3C/4 cancer. Despite this daunting news, she remains strong.

The successful fundraiser featured a five-a-side soccer tournament, Bingo, live entertainment, a kiddies’ corner and even a hair spray station.

Diane’s daughter, Jordin Young, shared her gratitude, “It went well, the attendance was better than expected. Family, friends and supporters we didn’t even know showed up to support my mum.”

The event raised enough money to cover one chemotherapy session, a crucial step in Smith’s treatment. Through it all, Smith and her family remain hopeful.

“I have two amazing children, and am grateful for the supportive friends and family I find myself surrounded by,” she said.

How you can help

Smith’s family still needs to raise R180 000 to cover the full cost of her comprehensive treatment and recovery.

This includes:

• radiation and chemotherapy,

• specialist consultations;

• follow-up tests;

• travel expenses;

• nutritional support;

• in-home care during recovery.

Teams battle it out on the pitch during the fun-day fundraiser in support of Diane Smith.

Every contribution, big or small, will make a significant difference in Smith’s journey to recovery.
