Women’s health takes centre stage at South Hills with Pink Drive

Community women receive free mammograms, Pap smears, and HPV screenings as part of Women’s Month awareness drive

In recognition of Women’s Month, the Pink Drive Mobile Health Team held a health awareness initiative at the South Hills Recreation Centre on August 12.

The initiative emphasised the importance of women’s health, particularly in the fight against breast cancer.

According to StatsSA, 1 in 27 women in South Africa gets diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, making it the most common cancer among women.

The initiative offered mammograms, Pap smears, and HPV screenings to women in the community. The turnout was overwhelming, with many women taking proactive steps to prioritise their health.

Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame emphasised the importance of preparation and regular health check-ups.

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail. Women need to take their health seriously,” said Chame.

The event served as a reminder for women to prioritise their health throughout the year, not just during Women’s Month.

Early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer. Women must be aware of the five warning signs of breast cancer, which include new lumps or thickening in the breast or underarm, changes in the size or shape of the breast, skin changes, nipple changes, and persistent breast pain.

By being proactive and informed, women can take control of their health and reduce the risk of breast cancer.
