Hawks visit City Power over ‘R67m contract’ investigation
City Power says the Hawks’ visit was routine and not a raid, as the investigation continues.
City Power confirmed on September 25 that a team from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) visited its headquarters as part of an ongoing investigation initiated in 2024.
According to City Power’s General Manager of Public Relations and Communication, Isaac Mangena, the Hawks had previously served the utility with a formal Request for Information (RFI).
City Power stressed that the Hawks’ visit formed part of the normal course of the investigation and was not a raid.
The entity said it continues to cooperate fully with the lawful process and remains committed to providing all necessary information.
Eyewitness News reported that the investigation relates to a questionable R67 million purchase order for electricity transformers placed in 2023. Although payment was made, sources allege that the transformers were never delivered.

The Hawks confirmed to the publication that they are probing several contracts linked to City Power, with their visits aimed at collecting evidence for the investigation.
Mangena reiterated that City Power would continue to cooperate with the Hawks or any other authorised legal entity investigating the matter.
The Southern Courier has contacted City Power for further comment and is awaiting a response.
