Power outages plague Ward 56: Residents left in the dark

City Power works to stabilise power supply.

Residents of Ward 56 in Johannesburg south have been experiencing frequent power outages since November 19, with some areas going without electricity for days.

The outages have been attributed to inclement weather conditions and payment issues with contractors, which have delayed restoration efforts.

Areas such as Townsview, Oakdene, Rosettenville, Mulbarton, Mayberry Park and Mondeor have been particularly affected, with nightly power outages reported.

The cause of these outages was identified as a faulty cable submerged in a puddle of water in Lilly Street, Rosettenville, due to a burst pipe.

City Power has alleged that Johannesburg Water damaged the power line while working on the burst pipe.
However, City Power has managed to rebalance the load to prevent overloading, and the situation in these areas has since stabilised.

Ward 56 Clr Michael Crichton spoke about the outages.

“I am working closely with City Power to address the root causes of these outages and ensure that our residents have access to reliable electricity. I have repeatedly requested that the City Power team restore power to our communities. They are working on the issues.”

The power outages have highlighted the need for improved infrastructure and maintenance in the area.

City Power has urged residents to report any further outages and has assured them that efforts are underway to prevent future disruptions.
