Southern stars shine bright at musical showcase

DeeJoy School of Music shines a spotlight on rising talent and unveils Abby Joy’s newest single.

DeeJoy School of Music, founded two decades ago by Abigail Joy Abrahams, known in the community as Abby Joy, marked its 20-year milestone with a vibrant musical showcase in Mondeor.

What began as a small community project in Bellavista has since grown into a long-standing artistic hub that has kept many young people engaged through learning instruments.

Over the years, the school has trained countless young musicians, including numerous worship team members from churches across the region.

“Twenty years later, we now specialise in instruments such as piano, drums, guitar, and bass, and not to forget vocals,” said Abby Joy.

The anniversary showcase was held at the Beacon of Light Oasis Community Centre, where attendees were treated to an evening celebrating young, fresh talent, as well as the live launch of Abby Joy’s new single, Be Still My Soul. The audience also took part in the filming of her upcoming music video, due for release soon.

Abby Joy emphasised the calibre of her teaching team, saying: “Our teachers are experienced specialists in their art. I’m on piano and vocals, Devine Mitchell is on guitar and bass, Tatum Crowder on drums and vocals, and Shanley Loren on piano.”

Following the performances, music students from DeeJoy School of Music were awarded certificates, medals, and trophies for their achievements across the various instruments they have studied.

Certificate recipients included: Keamogetsoe Phala, Marino Da Conceicao, Alajoy Mukendi, Jayden Mukendi, Adrian Simons, and Cruz Abrahams.

Musicianship medals were awarded to: Khrishna Chhana, Tyler Solomans, Ethen Yarde, and Alexis Abrahams.

The coveted Top Musician for 2025 title was shared this year between two rising stars, Kaylah Davids and Yashil Ramjee.

Apart from her teaching work, Abby Joy is also an established gospel artist. She previously released two songs, Dancing in the Rain and Happy Moments, though her music career paused when she faced a period of personal loss. “After the release of these songs, I stopped for a long while to deal with the loss of loved ones,” she explained.

“After this recovery, Dancing in the Rain is now available on Spotify and most platforms. This song helped me and so many others get through the darkest of times.”

Her newest singles, Be Still My Soul and Christmas Spent With You, are also available on Spotify and other platforms. “The music videos for all three songs will be released over the next few weeks,” she said, adding that they will be available on YouTube and across various digital platforms.
