Transnet freight train fire contained in Dinwiddie

Quick action by Ekurhuleni firefighters prevented further damage after a freight locomotive caught alight beneath a bridge in Dinwiddie on Friday night.

On 12 November 2025, firefighters from the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services (DEMS) responded to a Transnet freight train fire at the corner of Stuland Road and Grasmere Union Train Station in Dinwiddie.

The incident occurred at approximately 20:49.

Fire crews from Vosloorus, Wadeville, Alberton, and Germiston fire stations responded to the scene with two medium fire engines and two major water tankers.

“Upon arrival, it was found that the locomotive caught fire under the bridge.

“Electricity was isolated by a Transnet technician, and the crews immediately started an offensive attack and managed to bring the flames under control.

“Crew members exited safely, and no injuries were reported,” said City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services spokesperson Eric Maloka.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation by Transnet safety officials.
