WATCH: Chemical explosion in Electron leaves several injured
Emergency services rushed to Electron after a chemical explosion left multiple people with burn injuries, including two in critical condition, as HAZMAT teams conduct search and rescue operations.
A chemical explosion occurred in Electron, Johannesburg South, prompting emergency services to respond around 14:30.
Upon arrival, responders discovered multiple people with burn injuries, two of whom are in critical condition and have been transported to Netcare Alberton, along with a third patient.
According to the ER24 Johannesburg South branch manager, Faheem Eessop, there is one staff member unaccounted for, indicating a possible P4 situation.

FOX Security was on scene assisting with crowd control and scene management. HAZMAT teams have arrived at the scene, and responders are currently awaiting instructions from the fire platoon commander regarding the safety of the paramedics entering the building.

The situation remains under control as they stand by for further updates. However, COJ EMS fire teams and HAZMAT units are currently conducting search and rescue operations.
The cause of the explosion is unknown at this stage.
