Five years of ‘Nominate to Educate’: 2026 AVBOB Road to Literacy nominations open

South Africans can nominate underserved primary schools and education-focused NPOs to receive 2 000 trolley libraries stocked with one million books to help young learners build a lifelong love of reading.

AVBOB, in partnership with Oxford University Press Southern Africa (OUPSA), has opened nominations for the fifth year of its Road to Literacy campaign, calling on South Africans to help improve access to reading resources for young learners.

Running until March 31, the Nominate to Educate initiative invites the public to nominate underserved public primary schools and education-focused NPOs to receive mobile trolley libraries.

This year, the campaign will donate 2 000 trolley libraries, each stocked with 500 CAPS-aligned books, placing one million books into classrooms nationwide.

“This is our most ambitious year yet, and we have seen how even one trolley can transform a classroom and boost learner confidence,” said Nakedi Pilane, executive director at AVBOB.

The Road to Literacy campaign, launched in 2022, supports early-grade reading by providing classroom-ready libraries with books in all 11 official written languages.

This year, the initiative doubles its 2025 contribution, amounting to R115m.

To date, the programme has donated approximately 4 000 trolley libraries, distributed nearly two million books, and invested R227m in literacy development.

Anyone can participate by submitting a nomination via the AVBOB Road to Literacy website.

Sharing the campaign helps ensure more deserving schools and organisations benefit, supporting efforts to address South Africa’s literacy challenges.

Full details on eligibility, selection and timelines are published with the nomination form on the AVBOB Road To Literacy website.
