Update: Makayla undergoes successful spinal surgery as community rallies behind family Fun Day fundraiser

Makayla Lombard’s recovery journey continues as the community prepares for a major Family Fun Day in her support.

Makayla Lombard’s recovery journey has taken a hopeful turn after she underwent posterior lumbar decompression surgery on February 6 at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

The procedure involved removing the disc that was placing pressure on her spinal nerves, performing a bone graft, and inserting short rods into her spine to stabilise her spine and aid recovery.

The surgery was necessary to relieve nerve compression caused by a narrowing in her lower spine, a condition that had left her in severe pain and struggling with mobility.

According to her mother, Misha Cooper, the difference was noticeable almost immediately.

“We saw the progress almost instantly. She came out of surgery and was complaining, asking why her foot was in the air. We asked which foot, and she quickly showed us by moving it. Needless to say, she was flat on the bed, no feet in the air,” she added with a laugh.

For a family that had endured months of waiting and medical uncertainty, the moment felt nothing short of miraculous.

Lombard is now working with physiotherapists to regain strength and mobility.

Her family says her pain has reduced significantly and her movement has already improved.

While the road to full recovery will take time and rehabilitation, the early signs have been encouraging.

As Lombard continues her recovery, the community is stepping up in a big way.
