Lumu CBO gives hope to vulnerable children

A Johannesburg South community organisation is supporting disadvantaged children with food, clothing and care, while calling on the public to help families facing poverty and disability challenges.

The Lumo Community-Based Organisation is seeking assistance from the public to help continue its work of supporting vulnerable children in communities around Johannesburg south.

LCBON-Child and Youth Care Centre is a volunteer community-based organisation that cares for disadvantaged, underprivileged, and suffering children through donations, fundraising, and awareness campaigns.

It was founded in 2017 by Samuel Robert Lumu in Johannesburg south and is a registered NPO (NPO 232-713) dedicated to supporting orphaned, abandoned, and vulnerable children.

They raise donations and run awareness campaigns to improve the lives of children in need.

LCBON provides support, such as food, school supplies, clothing, and basic household items, to struggling families.

The organisation also receives support from FoodForward SA, which provides food parcels every month. These parcels help families who sometimes struggle to have enough food.

During community visits, the organisation discovered that many families have children with disabilities who need special care.

Some of these children need medical treatment, counselling and equipment such as wheelchairs and walking sticks.

LCBON says many families cannot afford the care these children need. Currently, about 15 children need urgent treatment and support.

Another problem is that many children do not have enough clothes. Some children wear old or torn clothes for years, which can affect their confidence and self-esteem.

The organisation is also facing challenges with space, as it does not have a permanent facility to keep and support the children.

To help, the organisation is asking people to donate new or second-hand children’s clothes.

“We would also like to be assisted with a place where we can keep the children safely, as our organisation continues to support many vulnerable children in the community,” said Lumu.

LCBON is also calling on businesses, organisations and community members to support their work through donations and volunteering to help improve the lives of children in Johannesburg South.
