Siya Kuse gets WBC title shot on home soil

Siya Kuse to rematch Melvin Jerusalem in a rare South African World Championship fight

History will be made in South African boxing on May 16, when Siya Kuse, a Johannesburg-based boxer, challenges reigning WBC minimumweight champion Melvin Jerusalem of the Philippines.

The fight will take place at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg. It will be only the second time a World Boxing Council world title fight takes place on South African soil.

Kuse, who went toe-to-toe with Jerusalem in a closely contested bout in the Philippines last year, now gets his shot at redemption and the prestigious WBC green belt.

Kuse trains with coach Manny Fernandez at Brian Mitchell Academy. Heavyweight prospect Ethan Peters also trains at the gym.

Only two South Africans have ever won the WBC belt, namely Sugarboy Malinga and Dingaan Thobela.

“This isn’t just another fight night, it’s a monumental achievement for African boxing,” said promoter Rodney Berman of Golden Gloves.

“We are bringing the fight to Emperors Palace, believing that South Africa will crown a new South African legend.”

The Filipino champion is flying into the ‘lion’s den’ to defend his crown against a determined Kuse, promising another all-action war for fans at the Palace of Dreams.
