Gold Reef City workers on strike

They rejected 0.9% offer from the employer.

Southern Courier has learned that members of the Transport, Retail and General Workers Union (THORN) are on strike at Gold Reef City Casino and Theme Park in Ormonde.

The protected strike began on April 25 over wage disputes, leading to the closure of the theme park, as workers rejected a 0.9% increase and demanded 7.5% to 12%, better transport allowances, and restored benefits.

Key details of the 2026 Gold Reef City strike:

• Duration: The strike has resulted in the partial closure of the theme park for several days since April 25.

• Demands: Workers are demanding a 7.5% to 12% salary increase (previously rejected a 0.9% offer), an increase in transport allowance from R50 to R80 per shift, and the restoration of provident fund contributions.

Workers vowed to continue until management returns to the negotiating table.

Gold Reef City recently celebrated its 40th birthday on April 24.

Gold Reef City management was contacted for comment; they said they are currently operational and have no comment regarding the strike.
