LISTEN: SATMA-winning artist Mlethwa Majola releases powerful song with social message

The Booysens-based SATMA award-winning musician says his latest release, Siyakhuleka, aims to educate listeners about discrimination against homosexuals and people living with albinism.

Booysens-based Maskandi artist Mlethwa Majola has released a thought-provoking new single, Siyakhuleka, featuring young artist Masinga.

This will soon be followed by an EP. He said he wants to convey an important message about discrimination against, among others, homosexuals and people living with albinism.

“The core message of the song focuses on discrimination against homosexuals and people living with albinism.”
He said musicians need to be mindful of the diverse audiences they speak to through their music. “These people are often not welcomed in our society. We need to educate people about these intricacies through our music.

“We need to be exemplary as musicians as we make music to all people, not certain individuals. Although this single is a slow jam, the subsequent EP will be fully Maskandi. I made it a slow jam so that people can listen to the message carefully,” he said.

Majola in the game

Mlethwa has won two SATMA awards for best newcomer and best video.

With nearly a dozen albums under his belt, he is still going strong because his music contains a message for everyone.

He started in 1998 with a group called Izintombi zikaMajola. He then went solo in 2010 with the album Siyabakhumbula.
