Still a child under the age of eighteen

It irks the living daylights out of me that adult rates apply at the discretion of establishments!

For example Joburg Zoo entrance fee for three to 12 year olds is R40 and for adults (anyone over the age of 12) is R65.

At Nu Metro, the prices differentiate depending on which movie is being seen, 2D, 3D, etc, but, the fact remains, over the age of 12 years of age, adult rates apply.

Gold Reef City advertises a ‘family package’ for a family of four. For two parents and two children under the age of 16 the cost is R515! Being a family of four, my one child being 14 and the other 17 years of age, I telephoned Gold Reef City to enquire on the family package they advertise, to get smugly informed “You wouldn’t qualify for the family package, you will have to pay the full rate, this is the way it works”!

My 17-year-old is still a child, he is still in high school, he is still a dependant, we all live under one roof, we are still a ‘family of four’, regardless!

To Gold Reef City and to all other establishments, the Bill of Rights and the Children’s Act clearly define a child as ‘a person under the age of 18 years of age’ this being the reason they cannot buy alcohol, obtain a drivers licence, enter into any contract or even vote for their country.
