Ward 57 Councillor slams City for neglect amid G20 Summit
Clr Faeeza Chame says millions were spent for show while potholes, leaks, and broken lights continue to plague the ward.
Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero has promised that the success of the G20 Summit will translate into lasting service delivery, with a focus on fixing potholes, collecting refuse and improving infrastructure.
However, I remain sceptical and wonder whether the City’s commitment to improvements will be sustained beyond the summit.
Ward 57 residents feel that the event’s showcase has left their needs behind. I feel that Ward 57 was neglected despite the City’s efforts to present a polished image for international guests.
Millions of rands were squandered on this event. Rand Airport Road is a disaster: cars are damaged daily, there are overgrown trees everywhere, and water leaks that never get fixed.
When repairs are done, they leave gaping holes like small swimming pools behind. Our street lights never work, which is a huge concern.
I am questioning the City’s priorities, wondering why infrastructure improvements were focused on areas where leaders were visiting, while other areas like Ward 57 were left behind.
There is a growing demand that the City be more transparent and accountable in its spending and decision-making processes. Residents are frustrated with temporary fixes and superficial changes.
The City must prioritise residents’ needs and work towards meaningful and lasting improvements.
