Gauteng Champion of Champions returns

THE Gauteng Champion of Champions will return when three of the top Premier Soccer League sides face each other.

The Provincial Government has announced that they will once again be hosting South Africa’s first-of-a-kind football tournament, the Gauteng Champion of Champions. The groundbreaking football initiative was recently launched.

Popularly positioned as the T20 and Rugby 7’s of football, the tournament will once again feature three quality PSL clubs and reigning champions in a round robin competition. They are SuperSport United FC – 2016 Nedbank Cup Champions; Bidvest Wits FC – 2016 MTN 8 Champions; and Highlands Park FC – NFD Playoff Champions .

The second edition of the tournament will make a return to the Tsakane Stadium and is set to take place on Sunday, November 13. Fans will be treated to a full family day of football action by three high-quality PSL clubs who will battle it out to be crowned champions of Gauteng.

Football fans will once again enjoy a first-of-its-kind format of high-paced football action where all three teams take each other on in a 45-minute match, which will leave the teams with no choice but to go for an all-out attack for the enjoyment of the fans.

Replacing the traditional penalty shootout should matches end in a draw will once again be the Dribble Out concept where a player starts further back from the penalty spot and has 10 seconds to beat the goalkeeper.

MEC for Sport, Art, Culture and Recreation in Gauteng, Ms Faith Mazibuko, urges fans to come out in their numbers in support of this unique initiative.

“As the province of champions, Gauteng prides itself on developing such initiatives that not only bring excitement to our province but demonstrate that we are a government that truly cares and understands the needs of our community. This is a tournament that we want Gauteng citizens to be proud of and it can only grow with their support. We therefore call upon the people of Gauteng and Ekurhuleni in particular to come out in their numbers and enjoy this tournament which we are working tirelessly to put together for them,” said Mazibuko.

Tickets to the Gauteng Champion of Champions are now available at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers as well as Usave Outlets.

Gates to the Tsakane Stadium will officially open from 11:00.

15:00 – Match 1 – Bidvest Wits v SuperSport United

16:00 – Match 2 – Loser Match 1 v Highlands Park FC

17:00 – Match 3 – Highlands Park FC v Winner Match 1
