Locals tackle the Fish River Canoe Marathon

The 2022 Fish River Canoe Marathon took place in Cradock where paddlers were challenged by 80km of wild water splashing and numerous challenging rapids over two days.

A number of paddlers from Gauteng headed to Cradock in the Eastern Cape to gather at Grassridge Dam for the start of the exciting fun-filled river race.

The top finishers from the local club in Gauteng included the second place position, which was a K3 (three-man kayak) with Riccardo Talevi, Nicholas Weeks and Michael Arthur, who finished in a time of five hours 10 minutes over the two days.

Clinton Cook finished the race in a single kayak (K1), as the overall second-place finisher of the exciting race, just 11 minutes behind the three strong paddlers.

Christie Mackenzie finished as the second woman overall at the race in the U23 category in a time of 5 hours 50 minutes, having just returned from Portugal in time to make it to Cradock, where she competed at the International Canoe Federation World Marathon Championships event, where she earned a bronze medal.

Among the numerous paddlers from the Gauteng were also Mike Roy, Norman Andrews and Willie Du Plessis who teamed up in a three man kayak (K3) to enjoy and finish the exciting river race as the 22nd K3 finishers, and 13th in Sub Grand Masters (below 60 years), in a time of seven hours 13 minutes over the two days and 80km.
