Karatekas perform outstandingly at (WUKF) South African National Championship
With a competition background like Sandra Louw Karate (SLK)'s, it’s no wonder that when they compete at South African Championships, they do it well.
The Joburg south dojo, Sandra Louw Karate (SLK), showed up in numbers at the World Union of Karate Federations (WUKF) South African National Championships, which took place in Gqeberha from March 31 to April 2 this year.
Under the leadership of world karate legend sensei Sandra Louw, the club received 46 medals, of which 33 were gold.
Sensei Sandra won one of these in the veterans’ kumite open division as she made a comeback to tournament competition after a 12-year hiatus.
Alongside their teacher, the instructors also procured two gold medals and a silver in the female senior and veterans kumite and kata divisions, as well as the male senior kata division. Sensei Sandra believes the dedication, discipline and commitment that karate instils in our youth is invaluable.
The SLK team trained consistently for four months in preparation for the tournament and the results were rewarding.
Even though the dojo is a traditional one, its rich history of the world and South African titles spans decades, with countless SLK SA and World Champions attributing their success to the ethics and morals that are ingrained in them during the weekly classes.
“Karate offers a type of mental and physical advantage that is unlike any other form of activity, for both adults and children alike. Apart from self-confidence, self-defence and self-discipline, students also learn about comradery, friendship, and above all, what it means to work hard towards a goal, something that proves highly sought-after throughout life,” said Sandra.
