Boxing initiative get off to a great start

The project has gone beyond just the sport, it has helped the fighters with moral development.

The Box Office Project hosted at Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre started the year on a high note, with the amateur club being rebirthed, starting with newly graded amateurs.

The project is under the guidance of Anton Gilmore, the director of Fight with Insight and Debbie Gilmore.

Boxers such as Success Ngobeni, Ethan Peters, Bennie Lafua and Jedd Cornish have held the club’s name high with the guys having 12 fights in three months with 10 wins.

Peters, a tall 17-year-old, has looked impressive and knocked his opponent out in the first round of his last fight in Alberton, while Lafua, who started on a loss for the year, racked up three wins since learning his lesson.

Every month, The Box Office Project will grade at least four new fighters to the amateur circuit.

“These kids are trained free of charge while learning life skills through the Fight with Insight programme. This programme is the fourth-best project in the world for child care and development,” said Anton.

Fight with Insight was started by Anton, Luke Lamprecht and Sheri Errington in 2005, and run three gyms in Hillbrow – all four clubs collectively look after 330 children.

The gyms have 14 pro fighters and 90 amateurs, making it the biggest club in SA. Debbie has joined Anton at Suburbs as a life skills and nutrition coach, which the kids partake in after boot camp on Saturdays.

The Box Office Project is about exiting good youth into society with the 12 pillars of growth they use to grow strong and self-regulated kids.

Any interested parents wanting their children to develop good moral fibre and self-confidence should email Anton on boxofficegym@gmail.coms.

The team trains Mondays and Wednesdays at 15:45 and Saturdays from 08:30 to 10:30, after which they do two hours of community service. This includes cleaning the recreation centre or the streets around the gym.

The Box Office Project also trains the fitness fanatics at 17:00 from Monday to Thursday, and they can join the children on Saturdays. The gym was recently revamped to support the large patronage.
